The 2000 George V twenty cent piece was issued as part of the 'Monarchs' set in the Royal Australian Mint's Master Pieces in Silver Collection. The reverse features the obverse design used on the 1911 Florin with the Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal portrait of HM King George V and the Latin legend "GEORGIVS V D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D.IND:IMP:" The obverse features the more recent Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA 2000 - TWENTY CENTS".

George V was King of the United Kingdom between 1910 and 1936. He was born on the third of June 1865 as the second son of Edward VII. When he turned 18 George entered the Royal Navy but was forced to return home when his elder brother died, making him heir to the throne. (BBC, 2014) In 1910 George ascended to the throne while Europe was in a growing state of tension. When the First World War broke out in 1914 George V gained substantial public support as he undertook multiple visits to the front line and other key sites. After WW1 the relationships of subjects to their sovereign changed and over the next two decades British dominions gained further autonomy and India gained effective self-governance in 1935. In 1936, a year after celebrating his Silver Jubilee, George V died and was succeeded by his son Edward.
